Joseph Wilson On the Saddam - Al Qaeda Connection

Mr. Wilson has become better known as the envoy who debunked the reports that Iraq had bought uranium from Niger. However, let's get his thoughts on the connection between Al Qaeda and Iraq:

"It does seem to me entirely possible and likely that Saddam's intelligence services may have had ties or may have had links or may have had contacts with al-Qaeda."

Oh, I can wear my Maureen Dowd button proudly. A more complete excerpt paints a somewhat different picture:

I discount to a certain extent the assertions that the links between al-Qaeda and Saddam's government are operational in nature. It does seem to me entirely possible and likely that Saddam's intelligence services may have had ties or may have had links or may have had contacts with al-Qaeda. That would be prudent. Most intelligence services that didn't have their hands tied behind their back would welcome the opportunity to have contact with enemies of their enemies so as to know what was being planned.

It does not stand to reason, however, that the operational links would have been such or any links would have been such as to be operational and particularly with respect to September 11th as was being asserted, as, in fact, was the first of the assertions that were made by the neo-conservative crazies, as Dr. Cordesman likes to call them.

Non-operational links. Does that mean we had nothing to worry about down the road? Interesting.
